Finding time to practice is absolutely vital if we want to progress and develop as singers 🗣🎤 The voice is a muscle and must be worked frequently if we want to see improvement 🫁🧠 You wouldn’t expect an athlete to succeed if they only trained once a week. Have the same approach with your voice! ✨ Here are my top tips to improve your practice routine 💫 🌟 Schedule in your practice sessions for the week. By scheduling a time in your calendar for your practice, you are much more likely to stick to it. 🌟 Understand that practicing is about gradually getting better, not being perfect the first time around. How much water should I drink a day? This question is often asked by singers, and there are a lot of mixed messages and differing opinions when it comes to this topic💧 The fact is our fluid needs are enormously variable and individual💧 This is because our hydration levels are influenced by lots of different factors such as: physical activity, body size, age, external temperature and body composition 🏃🏻☀️❄️🏃🏻‍♀️ When you explore the literature and studies on daily water intake it offers differing recommendations. 💦 For instance the NHS recommends drinking between 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Whilst the European Food Safety Authority suggested that woman should aim to drink about 1.6 litres and men should aim to drink 2 litres per day. Duncan Rock a professional classical singer and nutritionist would suggest another method of calculating your daily water intake. He suggests to drink 1ml of water for every daily calorie you consume. If you are consuming 2,000 daily calories you would want to drink 2.0 litres of water. By monitoring it this way you are taking into account other factors such as activity levels 💃🏻 He also advises that for performers you should add another 150ml on top of this per hour, during rehearsals and performances 🎤🎭 Unfortunately there is no set answer for how much water a singer should drink in a day as everyone’s body and circumstances are completely different. However it is very important to note the timing of your water intake as it is key ⏱ It is highly advised to drink your water at regular intervals throughout the day. Rather than drinking a large amount at one time. 🌟 Top tips to learn vocal riffs 🌟 Here are some of my favourite tips to help you improve your vocal riffs. To be able to do intricate riffs you will need to have excellent vocal agility. 🌟 learn the pentatonic scale - most riffs are formed around the major and minor pentatonic scale. Once you’ve mastered these scales you’ll find riffing will become a lot easier as your voice will be familiar with those note patterns. 🌟 break it down into smaller sections - it is common to feel overwhelmed by a long intricate riff. By breaking it down into smaller sections it allows you to learn the note pattern slowly and gradually build it up. So you don’t feel as if the riff is impossible for you to master. 🌟 practise at a slower tempo - by slowing the riff down it allows your body to relax and memorise the note pattern accurately before speeding it back up. 🌟 Try singing it on a consonant such as “Da” - practising your riff on a consonant enables you to cement the note pattern even more firmly into your voice before adding the lyrics back to it. 🌟 Slowly build up speed - if you’ve followed these steps you should now be able to sing the riff accurately at a slower tempo. Now all you have to do is gradually, at your own pace build up speed. Until you are singing it at the same tempo as the original song.

🌟 4 Vocal Health Tips to help keep your voice in tip top condition 🌟 🌟 Maintain good hydration - it is vital that as singers we stay hydrated! Our vocal cords vibrate 100 to 1,000 times per second when we speak or sing, depending on the note! Keeping them hydrated makes it easier for them to vibrate and produce a healthy sound. A good tip is to keep a 1 litre bottle with you throughout the day, it makes it easier to track how much water you’ve consumed. 🌟 Do vocal warm up exercises daily - it is important to do daily vocal exercises if you want to improve your voice. Your vocal cords need to be exercised in order to gain strength, similar to an athlete’s muscles when they stretch and exercise. Warm ups are a controlled, steady way of singing that does not stress your voice out. 🌟 Get adequate rest - as humans we require a minimum amount of sleep to function properly. A lack of sleep can cause fatigue and your voice mechanism may lack the strength to engage all the muscles involved to produce sound. This could lead to you straining and damaging your voice. Hence why prioritising you’re sleep is very important for your voice. 🌟 Maintain a balanced diet - A healthy voice requires a strong body and generally good muscle tone and endurance. Thus fuelling your body with a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats and limiting your intake of processed food will enable your voice to function as healthily and efficiently as possible. Dairy such as milk and cheese may cause excess mucus that could affect your voice quality, but are not necessarily bad for you. A balanced diet keeps you in good vocal health allowing you to sing to your hearts content!
